Are Negative Thoughts About Clutter Holding You Back?

Do you have negative thought patterns that keep you from moving forward with your decluttering and organizing goals?

You know the ones I mean!  Thoughts such as:

  • I have never been organized!  There is no hope!
  • There is too much clutter here!  No one would be able to get through all of this!

You must first clear your mind of unproductive thoughts about yourself and your clutter if you are to move forward with the physical work that lies ahead.

The Cup of Tea story illustrates this point

Zen Master Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he could no longer restrain himself.

Professor: “It is overfull. No more will go in!”

Zen Master: “Like this cup, you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”

Is your mind, like the professor’s, so full of self-punishing thoughts about the state of your home or office that there is no room for hope and visions of  a soothing, clutter-free space?

If so, identify one negative thought about your clutter or disorganization.  Empty your mind of that thought and replace it with a more compassionate and positive one.

How to “reframe” your limiting beliefs

I don’t know where to start. → I will begin with what is in front of me.

I’ve tried before and failed. → I am continually growing and learning and I CAN develop a productive organizing style.

Be patient with yourself. If you’ve had these negative thoughts for yours, it will take time to replace them fully! Stay mindful and be compassionate with yourself as you reframe your beliefs.
