There is often a great deal of unused space in the top of a closet. In a linen closet, we often suggest stacking larger linens such as blankets, sheets and comforters in this space. However, if you would like to use this space for smaller items, use clear, labeled boxes that are easy to lift down when needed.
This photo is from the top of our linen closet. Our home is very small, so we keep some of our linens in a long clear plastic container under the bed and thus free up some of our linen closet space. Our “linen closet” actually only has one shelf which contains linens!
On this top shelf, I have used Container Store clear storage boxes as follows:
Accessory Boxes (2 small ones on the top)
Size: 7-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ x 3-5/8″ h Product number: 10008758 Cost: $1.79 each
Shoe Boxes (3 stacked on the left)
Size: 13″ x 7-1/2″ x 4-1/4″ h Product number: 10008759 Cost: $1.89 each
Sweater boxes (4 large boxes on the bottom right and middle)
Size: 15-5/8″ x 13-1/8″ x 6-3/4″ h Product number: 10008761 Cost $5.99 each
For even more options, visit the container store website and search under storage boxes.
Just to give you an idea of a few other often useful sizes, they offer a Boot Box which is 22-1/2″ x 14-3/4″ x 5-3/8″ h that costs $9.99 and a Deep Sweater Box which is 15-5/8″ x 13-1/8″ x 13-1/4″ h, also $9.99.
These boxes are made in the USA from the clearest, virtually unbreakable, acid-free polypropylene available.
