I was dubious when I first read this 10 Great Geek Hacks article, but there are some useful tips here! I knew of the binder clip and toilet paper roll ideas, but the repurposing of cassette tapes was new to me. The cassette tape lamp is a sophisticated project, but would be a fun weekend craft.
Caution! This is not an excuse to hang on to every toilet paper roll and old cassette tape! There are always more to be found if you, well, declutter some of them!
Tissue boxes: empty tissue boxes are perfect for storing plastic bags, whether to reuse at the store or to collect pet waste.
Wine and beer bottles: a lot of beer and wine bottles have very artistic packaging! They can add visual color and interest to your home by holding fresh, dried, or crafted flowers. I’ve also seen wine bottles with the tops shorn off as repurposed vases or drinking glasses.
Shoe boxes: do you have big drawers that need organizing? Shoe and gift boxes are perfect for this. Try lining them with a pretty paper to make them more appealing to use (if that’s important to you). These small cardboard boxes are perfect for holding socks, underwear, photos, stationary, and more.
Post-it notes: at one of my workshops, a woman expressed frustration that she can never find her cell phone at home. She puts it down, and forgets where it landed when she needs it! I suggested creating a designated place for the phone in her home: on a certain plate, in a bowl, or even on a post-it note that reads, “cell home!” If you lose track of your phone or keys, try creating a home for them. It may take effort to use the home effectively, but stick with it and you’ll save yourself tons of timing searching for things.
