Did you know that the Saturday after Thanksgiving is #SmallBizSat? For those of us who are conscious consumers, we may prefer to shop small and patronize small, local businesses rather than take part in the overwhelming shopping frenzy on Friday. Sometimes we all need products or services – and it feels good to spend our money supporting small businesses and the local economy.
Without further ado, here is a list of (some of) our favorite DC area local businesses
- The Bethesda Salt Cave
Bethesda Salt Cave is lined from floor to ceiling with Himalayan crystal rock salt and heated to 68 degrees. This heat generates a negative ionic charge in the salt rock which is released into the air. By breathing in the healing negative ionic charge and the 84 different trace elements found in the salt, our mind, body and spirit can detoxify, relax, and recalibrate and to heal on many different levels. - Creative Colony Coworking Creative Colony is a coworking space like no other. At the colony, you are not a nameless person who pops in to work in a quiet, yet inspiring environment in the heart of Silver Spring. You will be treated like family while being supported in your business growth by other creative entrepreneurs.
- Urban Winery
The talk of Bonifant Street in Silver Spring! But don’t take our word for it: see their excellent rating on Yelp! The owners are friendly, community oriented folks and offer classes at affordable rates. I have to walk in there now and again just to admire the unique tables made from barrels. - Kefa Cafe:
I guess I have to take a step back and say that Kefa and Urban Winery tie for being the talk of Bonifant Street! Kefa has long been a favorite of mine (and many others, as was evidenced by their warm and totally packed reopening ceremony earlier in the year!) They have two locations: The original spot at 963 Bonifant St, Silver Spring, MD 20910 and one (with a smaller menu) at the Silver Spring Library. I have yet to find a Chai Latte to match Kefa’s. And it is not for lack of trying! It must be the love they put in it : ) Find them on Facebook and check out their 4.5 star rating on Yelp!
- Blessed Coffee:
Blessed Coffee is based on the philosophy, “from the farmer to your cup” and is established as a socially responsible business and trade geared towards development in coffee growing regions as well as in communities in the US where coffee is sold. Plus the coffee is yummy and Tebabu and Sara are both actively involved in enriching both Takoma Park and the growers they support. - Meekly Yours
These lovely hand-lettered stationary sets are designed and produced by local hand-letterer, Katie Meek. If you need to replenish your thank-you notes or holiday cards, consider buying from Katie! - Na Tra Tea
I found out about this lovely quiet tea house from a neighbor. They get great reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor. One happy visitor described Na Tra this way: “Pleasant little tea shop with good brews, comfortable seating, and a wonderful owner who goes out of her way to make you feel welcome and see that you are taken care of throughout your visit. Dedicated parking makes the place very accessible. The house tea is particularly good. A great place for a leisurely conversation with a friend over tea or coffee.”
And hey! Mindful Decluttering & Organizing is also a local small business! Give a gift that reduces clutter rather than creating it by purchasing one of our gift certificates.
