long-to-do-list

What? Don’t make a list!?

No, seriously, don’t make a list unless you commit to these three things:

  1. Keep your list in a consistent place
  2. Establish regular times to review your list(s)
  3. Set aside time to take action on the items on your list

Keep your list in a consistent place. Use a notebook, a three ring binder, an electronic note, a spreadsheet or any other tool that will help you to keep all of your action items in one place. You will save time not needing to search when you want to add an item to your list!

Establish regular times to review your list(s.) I am fond of David Allen’s suggestion to do a “weekly review.” Pick a specific day and time each week to look at all of your lists, along with your big picture goals and visions. Keep your list by your vision board or some sort of visual reminder of your goals. Take this time to reduce your list and make decisions about things that you can choose NOT TO DO. I do this each Monday.

Make time to DO the action steps on your list. This may be the hardest step of all, but without it your list will grow and grow, along with your frustration and sense of not doing enough.

To keep your lists manageable, follow the The Two Minute Rule.
