A transition that many of us make during this autumn season is to rotate our clothes to prepare for cooler weather. As you put away your off-season clothes, identify those that you do not love, that you have outgrown (physically or psychologically) and pass them on to others who can appreciate them. Let go of inner talk such as “I could wear this if I:
o Altered it
o Found something to match it
o Gained weight
o Lost weight
Be honest with yourself, how likely is this change to happen? Are there other, more important priorities that deserve your time and attention? Apply the same questions to the seasonal clothes as you prepare to wear them.
One of my clients calls this process a reality check. Will I ever really benefit from hanging on to these items or would I benefit more from freeing up space and energy?
To increase your awareness of which clothes you wear regularly, when you hang up a recently worn item, either:
o Hang it to one side of the closet, or
o Turn the hanger around backwards
You will then be able to see more clearly which clothes are not being worn. Keep a trash bag in your closet for these and other items to donate.
