3 Steps to Declutter Your Spooky Attic or Basement

In Feng Shui philosophy, experts agree that clutter in your attic can block the fulfillment of your higher goals and wishes.

Karen Kingston, Feng Shui expert and the author of Clear your Clutter with Feng Shui, says “Clutter is trapped energy that has far-reaching effects physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.”

Kingston also notes that “your basement or cellar symbolizes your past and your subconscious mind. A cluttered basement symbolizes issues from the past not dealt with.”

Step one: Acknowledge the emotions and feelings that come up when you consider the clutter in your attic or basement. Often we are held back by barely conscious feelings that we do not wish to acknowledge and that are triggered by some or all of the items in these hidden spaces. Be mindfully nonjudgmental of your feelings, both pleasant and unpleasant. Do not be afraid to name your feelings. You might find it helpful to draw or journal about your feelings.

Step two: Visualize the space in its new and improved state. Feel the feelings that you will experience once the clutter is gone and the treasures that you have discovered are now stored in an organized fashion or displayed for your enjoyment. Breathe! Be mindful of the feelings your visualizations trigger within you.

Step three: Pick a small area or one category of items to tackle first.  Write down one action step that you will take, when you will take it, and how long you estimate it will take to complete just that one step. Take a before picture so that you will be able to see your progress!
